Pregnant dogs being abandoned in county
Worcestershire Regulatory ServicesA number of pregnant stray dogs are being picked up from the streets in Worcestershire, putting pressure on kennels and rescue services as they give birth to their litters.
Pip Griffin from the area's Dog Warden Service said pregnant dogs were being abandoned more frequently and it was "incredibly upsetting".
"Many of the dogs seized had large litters, meaning over 50 puppies were entered into rescue centres, showing the extent of the problem and why I encourage residents to choose adoption if they truly want a dog," she said.
Worcestershire Regulatory Services, which works on behalf of the county's district councils and other local authorities, seized 12 pregnant stray dogs in 2025.
Worcestershire Regulatory ServicesAmong the dogs that were abandoned were a dachshund that was found in Stourport-on-Severn, a German Shepherd in Bromsgrove and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in Malvern Hills.
The dog warden service found many of the dogs did not have a microchip.
In the absence of an owner coming forward, the animals were sent to rescue centres or foster homes to receive care.
All dogs safely delivered their puppies and had since been re-homed, the service added.
It advised owners to neuter their dogs and urged anyone who required support or advice to get in contact.
