A strong odour was identified near Green Park School's swimming pool, but nothing of concern was detected by fire service equipment

Fire engines have attended a school in Wolverhampton after "a number of people" there displayed unexplained symptoms.

Green Park School, a site for children with complex and profound learning difficulties, said it had closed to pupils and staff following the detection of an unusual odour near its swimming pool.

The school said paramedics were called to assess a small number of people who reported feeling nauseous, but that no serious concerns were identified.

Green Park and neighbouring school Stowlawn Primary, will be closed on Wednesday as a precaution while checks are carried out by school and council staff.

West Midlands Fire Service said it sent three fire engines at about 12:15 GMT, adding that while a strong odour was present in parts of the premises, specialist monitoring equipment detected nothing of concern.

In a statement, the school said: "Staff responded promptly with the health and wellbeing of children and staff the school's top priority.

"An investigation is now under way to determine the source of the odour, which is currently believed to be associated with a mechanical issue, and any remedial work which may be necessary. No chemical incident was identified."

The fire service said it prepared to scale down its presence at 14:40.

West Midlands Ambulance Service has been contacted by the BBC for comment.
