Green light to demolish 'outdated' Lidl store
LDRSPlans by Lidl to demolish the chain's "outdated" Bilston store and replace it with a modern supermarket have been approved.
City of Wolverhampton Council has backed plans put forward by the retailer for the high street building.
Lidl said its current offer there was "poor quality and outdated" and "falling short of modern standards".
The redevelopment includes plans by Lidl to knock down the derelict former Swan pub next door to make way for more parking.
The number of parking spaces would increase from 136 to 155 and include spots for cycles and electric vehicles.
According to the planning application: "The existing food store is constrained by its outdated design and operational limitations, which compromise the quality of service currently offered.
"Redevelopment of the site to deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose retail unit would represent a significant enhancement to convenience shopping provision within Bilston town centre."
The council also green lit a new Lidl store and 17 new homes on the site of the former Gills sausage factory and abattoir in nearby Parkfields, on the edge of Birmingham New Road and Parkfield Road.
