Two people have been arrested after an elderly pedestrian died in a suspected hit-and-run crash in Southampton.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the 90-year-old man was found with serious injuries on Butts Road, Sholing, shortly before 07:30 GMT on Wednesday. He died later in hospital.

A 36-year-old man and 73-year-old woman, both from Southampton, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after a road accident.

Police said they were looking to identify the driver of a black car, which was travelling on Butts Road in the direction of Portsmouth Road.

"We no longer believe this vehicle was involved in the collision but we do believe the driver may have witnessed the incident and we would like to speak with them," a statement said.

Police have also appealed for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.

The arrested man, who was also detained on suspicion of drug driving, remains in custody.

The woman has been released on bail until 21 April.
