A former children's home is set to be turned into a new £5million GP surgery.

Jordan's Brook House on North Upton Lane in Barnwood, Gloucester, will be demolished and will make way for the two-storey purpose-built medical centre, along with 10 new homes.

Councillors voted unanimously to approve the proposals for the former council services building.

There will be seven GPs, four nurses and two healthcare assistants at the site, as well as six receptionists, half a dozen admin staff and two managers.

Resident Phil McLellan told the planning committee the current surgery is not fit for purpose.

"It will provide better working conditions and allow Hucclecote Surgery to undertake minor surgical operations," he said.

McLellan also said that a new surgery would provide better facilities for patients and staff.

Mayor of Gloucester Ashley Bowkett, who is also a county councillor for Barnwood and Hucclecote, spoke strongly in favour of the proposals.

He said the current surgery has been under a lot of pressure for a long time.

Bowkett also said that this was "quite simply a long overdue improvement to health infrastructure for the east of Gloucester".

Conservative councillor Stephen Davies (Hardwicke and Severn) said work had been done to improve the plans.

He said: "Having taken feedback on the design of the building and the layout and parking, I think some credit should be given to officers on the work done on that."

The building was used by various council services in 2022 before closing.
