Fell roads in the Lake District have reopened after being closed for up to a fortnight during wintry conditions.

Exposed routes across the national park, including Cold Fell, Corney Fell, Hardknott Pass, Honister Pass and Newlands Pass, were closed on 30 December as a precautionary measure, Cumberland Council said.

The roads, including Whinlatter Pass from the visitors' centre to Lorton, have now reopened.

The area has seen snow and icy conditions in the first couple of weeks of the year, but it will get milder in the week ahead, forecasters said, though it will still be wet and windy.

Cumbria had seen freezing conditions with temperatures as low as -10.9C in the first week of the year.

Cold weather payments were also triggered for some households in the region, which sees those eligible receive help with energy bills when temperatures are recorded or forecast to be 0C (32F) or below over seven consecutive days.
