A new exhibition is due to open celebrating the history and identity of the Evington area of Leicester.

Popping To The Shops: Evington will feature objects from the museum's collections, photographs from the archives and items loaned by local businesses.

The free exhibition will also tell the stories of eight current firms in the area, including Bennett's Hardware, Evington Wines and Atlas Travel.

It is due to open at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday and run until 4 October.

Aadam Navsa, from Atlas Travel, said: "Evington Road has shifted a lot since we arrived. It's livelier, with more families, new cafes and food spots, fewer banks and more traffic.

"The community keeps evolving and so do we."

The exhibition, which has received public funding from Arts Council England, is the third in the Popping To The Shops series, following previous displays devoted to Narborough Road and Saffron Lane.

Assistant city mayor Vi Dempster said: "We're very pleased to highlight the stories of the people and businesses that make Evington such a distinctive part of our city."
