Thousands of Christmas trees will be collected in the coming weeks

As we start the new year, many of us will be looking to put 2025 behind us and have a fresh start.

Part of this can involve de-Christmassing the house and saying goodbye to our trees - especially if they are looking a bit worse for wear.

While many councils offer collections, another option involves registering for a charity to pick up and repurpose your tree, dubbed treecycling.

Trees will be turned into wood chippings and then used in a variety of ways - on local allotments, as biofuel, for paths on hospice grounds and even for animal enrichment.

The charities taking part ask for a donation in exchange for the service and have specific dates on which people are asked to leave out their trees.

Anyone wanting to have their tree collected needs to register on their local charity's website beforehand.

Gloucestershire

Sue Ryder is running its biggest treecycling scheme yet this year.

In Gloucestershire, collections will take place in the following postcodes:

GL2 0, GL2 8, GL2 9, GL3 1, GL3 2, GL20 5, GL20 6, GL20 7, GL20 8, GL50, GL51, GL52, GL53, GL54 1, GL54 2, GL54 4, GL54 5, GL55 6 and GL56 0.

Alysia Cameron-Price, community fundraising manager at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, said: "It's a perfect way to avoid landfill and use the trees on our hospice grounds so it's a lovely cyclical scheme."

Somerset

In Somerset, St Margaret's Hospice is collecting across Taunton and the east of the county.

Head of engagement for the charity, Steph Cox, said she hoped to collect around 2,300 trees and had a fundraising goal of £34,000.

"I've got 200 volunteers waiting to collect trees and it's a great volunteering opportunity for people to go out and work off those mince pies.

"We also donate the chippings to agricultural colleges where they are used in farming and across their grounds too, and the people who chip the trees volunteer their time," she said.

The charity is collecting trees in these postcodes:

TA1, TA2, TA3, TA4, TA5, TA6, TA7, TA10, TA11, TA12, TA13, TA14, TA15, TA16, TA17, TA18, TA19, TA20, TA21, BA5, BA6, BA7, BA10, BA16, BA20 and BA22.

Dorothy House has run a Christmas tree collection service in Bath and Wiltshire since 2017, collecting a total of 32,500 trees to date.

Last year, the charity used the wood chippings to create a nature trail at its site in Winsley.

This year, it is collecting trees from 9 January until 11 January in the following postcodes: BA1, BA2, BA3, BA4, BA11, BA12, BA13, BA14, BA15, SN11, SN12, SN13, SN14, SN15, SN16, BS31, BS39 and BS40.
