Chris and Tim Harris will take over Mere Cottage by The Mere in Ellesmere at Easter

Two brothers are set to bring water activities to a popular beauty spot.

The Paddle Bros, run by Tim and Chris Harris, will take over Mere Cottage by The Mere in Ellesmere at Easter, relocating from their current site at the Shropshire Union Canal.

Visitors will be able to hire stand-up paddle boards, as well as take part in canoeing and kayaking. Lessons will also be available, with bookings made online. Free paddle sessions are set to be offered on the opening day.

Tim said he and his brother had spent several years working with outdoor activity providers across the UK before launching their own business.

"We started Paddle Bros about three years ago at the Ellesmere Canal and River Trust yard, taking cubs, scouts, schools, and the Lakelands Academy," he said.

"We've integrated ourselves into the local community and [were] waiting for the right opportunity for The Mere to come up. Six months ago, we were presented with the opportunity and we went full force into it.

"There is a lovely walk around The Mere but we felt it wasn't being utilised to its fullest and we thought what could do that ensures the water doesn't go undervalued. "

Ellesmere mayor Liz Woodbridge said more than 300,000 people visited The Mere each year and the new activities could help boost its appeal further.

"it's important we have activities to offer people who come here, rather than just enjoy the nature," she said.

Councillor Rob Wilson, the authority's portfolio holder for transport and economic growth, said the site at Mere Cottage had recently been renovated and would now be leased to the business.

He added the venture would complement existing facilities nearby.

"It will be a great addition for people coming to visit, but will also help The Boathouse and the Kiosk," he said.
