A horse has been rescued after it slipped down the embankment of a river in Worcestershire.

Fire fighters from Wyre Forest Fire Station, Worcester Fire Station and Bromyard Fire Station attended the incident on 22 February and found the animal, named Mitchell, in deep fast flowing water in the River Stour.

An attending vet informed crews the safest way to retrieve Mitchell was to lift him as it was not possible to walk or swim him to safety.

The horse was then sedated while a nearby farmer used a tele handler to quickly lift Mitchell out of the water and to a safe place, where he was assisted to stand.

Afterwards he was covered in some rugs to keep him warm and after about 30 minutes he was able to walk back to his stable.

A spokesperson for Bromyard Fire Station said: "Thanks to everyone that took part in this challenging rescue, we achieved a brilliant result as a team."
