A 13-year-old boy has raised more than £2,500 online after his friend's home was destroyed by fire.

Lucas and his mum, Sharon, were spurred into action following a blaze at Fallow Hill flats in Leamington Spa.

"One of the little girls had literally run out with not even a pair of shoes on her feet, it was just heartbreaking," said Sharon, adding she was "extremely proud" of her son's actions.

"They've been left without a house. No clothes, they've got nothing and it's just quite sad," Lucas said.

Warwick District Council has confirmed four families were affected by the fire at the complex in Sydenham Drive, after it broke out about 16:30 GMT on Tuesday.

Three of the families need to be rehoused, while the fourth will be able to return as their property is habitable.

Lucas started the online fundraiser just hours after the fire, while his mum posted on Facebook asking for donations of clothes and other items for those affected.

Local pub The Fusilier has been taking in donations, Sharon said, with items also going to those in neighbouring flats.

"Today I must have delivered 30-40 bags and boxes of clothes and teddies to the family," she added. "Leamington have pulled out all the stops to help this family."

Lucas added: "Even if it's a pound, £5, anything really helps to be honest."

In a statement, the leader of Warwick District Council said he was shocked by the news of the fire and passed on his condolences to the family who lost their pet.

Councillor Ian Davison said the authority's housing officers would be available at the scene on Sydenham Drive, so residents could advise them of any damage and the wider impact could be assessed.
