A lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal crash in Leicester.

Leicestershire Police attended the crash on the southbound carriageway of the A46, just before the Anstey junction, at about 18:00 GMT on Tuesday.

The force said a lorry, a grey Land Rover Defender, a black Kia Ceed, a blue Volkswagen Sharan and Volkswagen Transporter were involved.

A man in his 20s, who police said was driving the Land Rover, was pronounced dead at the scene, while another man in his 30s was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the lorry, a 53-year-old man, was arrested at the scene and taken to custody where he remains.

The road was closed in both directions following the crash, but has since reopened following repair work.

National Highways said the vehicles have been recovered and that specialist contractors inspected the road due to a "large fuel spillage".
