No commitment given to make station accessible
GoogleNo firm commitment has been given to make a railway station more accessible, despite funds being made available for design works.
Earlier this month, the Department for Transport announced Ulverston Station in Cumbria was one of 23 for which it would commission detailed step-free access design plans for.
Liberal Democrat Westmorland and Furness councillor John Murray said at the time that the news brought "real hope" for users.
But it is understood there is no guarantee that works at Ulverston or the other 22 stations will go beyond this design stage. Rail Minister Lord Hendy said the government would only make commitments "we believe are affordable".
He said: "This government is committed to a rigorous approach and only making commitments we believe are affordable and would represent value for money to passengers and taxpayers."
The design works for Ulverston, which will include plans for a new footbridge and lifts, are expected to be complete by 2027.
