The busiest roads in Surrey are set to be gritted ahead of road surface temperatures forecast to dip below -2.2C (28F).

Surrey Highways says high routes will be gritted from 18:00 GMT on Tuesday and priority one roads will be gritted from 19:00.

The high routes are in a small area to the east of the county that covers the Downs, and priority one roads are the most important routes in the county in terms of volume of traffic carried.

Surrey Highways says it has 38 gritters and two mini gritters, which collectively travel about 1,775 miles (2,857km) when gritting priority one roads.

About 10,000 tonnes of grit have been stockpiled, with a Surrey Highways spokesperson saying it aims to keep its grit barns at 75% capacity.

"We are working hard to keep Surrey roads moving and drivers safe during winter," they added.
