Lane closures on a stretch of the M1 are still in place because of what engineers describe as a surface defect.

A National Highways spokesperson said "engineers have been working hard to identify the cause" between junction 12 at Toddington and junction 13 for Brogborough in Bedfordshire.

A reduced speed limit was in place on Thursday and Friday when the outside lane of the southbound stretch was closed "as a precaution" as rain had the "potential to worsen the situation".

A National Highways spokesperson thanked drivers for their continued patience as the agency continued to assess the problem.
