Multiple lanes of the M1 were closed due to an "infrastructure defect", National Highways said.

The lane closures affected both directions between junction 12 at Toddington and junction 13 for Brogborough in Bedfordshire.

The defect first closed part of the road on Tuesday evening, National Highways said.

Both carriageways fully reopened at about 19:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Two lanes were closed on the southbound carriageway and one lane closed heading northbound.

Drivers faced heavy congestion and delays.
