Santa visits help charity reach record total

A charitable organisation has raised a record total after taking Santa Claus around the streets of a Worcestershire town.

Since 2007, the Droitwich Lions Club has arranged for Santa Claus to visit children while collecting donations in the process.

The club said it usually raised between £8,000 and £9,000 throughout the month of December, but this year it raised a total of £10,300.

"It's fantastic and hats off to the people of Droitwich who have given generously and all the volunteers who turned out to help us in all weathers," organiser Dave Sherwin said.

"Now it's our job to spend it and find worthy causes to give it away to.

"We don't want it in our bank account, we want it out there for needy causes in and around Droitwich."

Mr Sherwin said no specific causes had been identified but said the club's welfare committee would be meeting to make a decision.

"It'll be local charities, children's charities if we can but we haven't identified any specifically yet." he said.
