More than 2,000 homes could be built on land near a hospital as part of a plan by a developer for a new "sustainable community".

Cheshire Fresh Ltd is preparing an outline planning application for a large, mixed-use development off the A530 Middlewich Road, close to Leighton Hospital in Crewe.

The firm said the scheme, called Weavers Green, was one of the few major growth sites for the town and represented a "logical extension" for Crewe.

A public consultation on the proposals, which include up to 2,100 homes and 65,500 sq ft (6,085 sq m) of space for businesses, runs until 6 April.

The developer said the land was in an easy to access location, close to significant employers like Leighton Hospital and Bentley Motors.

A spokesperson added that the site was suited for building on as it was "not constrained by significant landscape, ecological or heritage assets".

The scheme was planned as a complete neighbourhood, rather than just a housing development, they added.
