The cause of a fire at a derelict building is being investigated as suspicious, Kent Police say.

At its height six fire engines were at the scene of the blaze in St Julien Avenue, Canterbury, after being called at about 21:30 GMT on Friday.

Police said they went to secure the area and help the other emergency services.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said no-one was hurt although residents were initially advised to shut doors and windows because of a "large" amount of smoke.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Firefighters have been working overnight to extinguish the flames.

"One fire engine remains in attendance, with a watching brief in place to ensure there are no remaining hotspots."

Kent Police said: "An investigation into the circumstances of the fire is ongoing, at this stage the cause is believed to be suspicious."
