A man and woman were arrested on suspicion of robbery and remain in custody for questioning

A motorist who stopped to buy food for a woman who she thought was begging outside a shop ended up being carjacked, police said.

The victim had parked outside a Nisa store in Salford at about 11:00 GMT on Sunday, added Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

When the victim got back into her car, the same woman is said to have followed her into the vehicle, shortly followed by a man. The motorist drove around a corner before an altercation in the street led to the alleged offenders driving away in her car.

A 37-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man were arrested minutes later on suspicion of robbery and remain in custody for questioning, GMP said.

'Shocking and frightening'

The stolen vehicle was stopped by police in Manchester city centre at about 11:10 GMT on Sunday, the force said.

Det Sgt Dan Hayes said: "Intimidation, theft and assault have absolutely no place in our community, and we will not tolerate behaviour that puts innocent people at risk.

"This was a shocking and frightening incident for the victim, and [an] officer's quick response ensured both suspects were located and arrested within minutes."
