A man who died four days after a crash has been described as "forever a hero" and a "beloved husband and father".

Alan Bolton, 45, was injured in a collision on the A179 in Hartlepool last Friday but he died in hospital, Cleveland Police, which is continuing to investigate the crash, said.

His wife Helen said he was a "devoted son, a cherished brother" and a "beloved dad", adding the family was "devastated" at his passing.

"Alan will forever be a hero, who donated his organs so that others could live on when he could not," a family statement read.

Mrs Bolton said: "My darling husband and our children's beloved dad was taken from us this week.

"He was a devoted son, a cherished brother and surrounded by friends who loved him.

"We are all devastated and reeling from his loss."

She thanked the Great North Air Ambulance Service and James Cook University Hospital "who did absolutely everything to save him and keep him with us, even though ultimately he couldn't be saved".
