New lines of inquiry are being pursued in the case of a teenager believed murdered almost 28 years ago.

Donna Keogh, 17, was last seen in Middlesbrough in April 1998.

Cleveland Police said although her body was never found, it was "strongly suspected" she was killed shortly after going missing.

The force said the teenager was being exploited and had travelled to Leeds where "fresh lines of inquiry" were being pursued.

Officers are focusing their search in Chapeltown and want to hear from anyone who may have seen or spoken to her.

Det Ch Insp Steven Chatterton said the force was "determined to find out what happened to Donna".

'Unbearable uncertainty'

"Even the smallest detail could be the missing link," he said.

"Donna's family have lived with unbearable uncertainty for nearly 30 years.

"Tragically, Donna's father Brian recently passed away without ever learning what happened to his daughter - something which has caused profound distress to the family."

In 2015 the force apologised to her parents over its handling of the investigation.
