Cumbria Police said someone could be seriously or fatally injured

Police are investigating reports of youths throwing crockery, stones and glass bottles from a bridge on to a road.

Cumbria Police said it received multiple reports of items, including chairs, eggs and plates, being thrown from the road above the tunnel leading from Ladies' Walk in Workington to the main shopping centre precinct.

The force said it was "proactively targeting the area" to deter youths and was working to identify those responsible.

A spokesman said: "This is extremely dangerous and if these items were to hit a person below it could result in serious injury or, even worse, fatal injury."

They added if anyone was injured, those responsible would face prosecution.

"It cannot be impressed upon enough how serious and dangerous this behaviour is."
