West Cumbria Magistrates' Court was forced to adjourn all cases

A court has been forced to shut suddenly due to flooding inside the building.

West Cumbria Magistrates' Court in Workington suspended all hearings for the day after a burst pipe damaged tiles on the first floor landing where the courtrooms are located.

Toilets were also inaccessible, with the sound of running water audible from the landing where the carpet was sodden. Access to the main staircase was also shut.

All cases not heard before the decision to close was made on health and safety grounds were adjourned.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said no further hearings would be changed.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused," he added.
