A council could be moving a step closer to reaching a deal on devolution by joining with its neighbouring authority.

West Northamptonshire Council is holding an extraordinary meeting on Friday to discuss devolution options.

Last month, the government asked council leaders and chief executives for expressions of interest for the creation of Foundation Strategic Authorities.

In a West Northants Council report published ahead of the meeting, it was recommended that "the council should express an interest in establishing a Northamptonshire Foundation Strategic Authority - working with North Northamptonshire".

The report states "a South Midlands/South Midlands plus is the best geography... however given that there isn't full consensus" it should express interest in a Northamptonshire authority with the "additional caveat of being open to opportunities to expand".

The report adds "delaying the council's decision to progress with devolution could mean that the benefits associated with devolution and additional regional investment are delayed".

A Foundation Strategic Authority does not include a mayor and has relatively limited powers, funding and responsibilities.

The report before council says "not progressing towards a Foundation Strategic Authority now could delay the pathway to becoming a mayoral Strategic Authority with the broader benefits that brings".

The government has asked for all expressions of interest to be submitted by 20 March.

North Northamptonshire Council is holding an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday, 18 March to discuss its devolution options.

Both of the county's unitary councils have been run by Reform UK since last year's local elections.
