A building society branch has been left severely damaged after an early morning ram-raid.

Northamptonshire Police said a telehandler was stolen from Payne's Nurseries in Watling Street, Towcester.

It was then used to steal a cash machine at the Nationwide Building Society branch in Sponne Arcade in the town.

A Nationwide spokesman said it was working to reopen as soon as possible.

"We are aware of the incident at our branch in Towcester which happened early this morning," the Nationwide spokesman said.

"We are working to reopen the branch and get the ATM replaced as soon as possible."

He said customers could visit other face-to-face service, in nearby Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire, or Northampton.

Police appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage to get in touch.
