A man has been charged in connection with an assault on a traffic attendant and four police officers in County Down.

Police say the incident occurred on Main Street in Newcastle shortly before 16:00 GMT on Saturday.

The man, 28, is charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, five counts of assault on police, resisting police and disorderly behaviour on licensed premises.

One of the men sustained serious facial injuries during the incident.

He is due to appear before Downpatrick Magistrates' Court on Monday.
