A murder investigation has been launched after a man died in an alleged assault.

A man in his 50s died on Tuesday shortly after being taken to hospital with serious injuries, Durham Police said.

The force was called to reports of an assault on Dent Street in Shildon at about 13:00 GMT.

Officers arrested a 49-year-old man in connection with the assault and he remains in police custody.

A cordon is in place while investigations continue, the force said.

Det Ch Insp Sharon Alderson warned there would be an increased police presence in the area, but she believed it was an isolated incident.

"We understand that this incident will have caused shock to the community, and our thoughts are with the victim's loved ones during this difficult time," she said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
