A 14-year-old girl has died more than a week after she was involved in an accident on railway tracks.

Police officers were called at around 08:00 BST on 22 April to reports of a casualty on the tracks in Shildon, County Durham.

British Transport Police said the girl, who is not being named in accordance with her family's wishes, was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition and died on Saturday.

The force said the incident was not being treated as suspicious and the family had expressed their "sincerest thanks to everyone who has reached out to them".

Greenfield Academy, in Newton Aycliffe, previously confirmed one of its pupils was involved in the accident.

At the time, executive head teacher James Keating said the school had been "providing support [to its] children and the wider school community".
