All-female team make coast patrol history

For the first time in its 27-year history a coast rescue patrol team has been made up entirely of women.

Felixstowe Coast Patrol and Rescue (FCPR) in Suffolk, celebrated having its first all-female team on board the lifeboat - which is called Last Orders - on Sunday.

The patrol was formed in 1997 after the closure of the local HM Coastguard rescue boat.

A spokesperson from the team said it was proud to announce that the patrol had marked "a historic moment for FCPR".

Marie Worley, the team's coxswain, said: "It's a proud moment.

"I was the first female coxswain and I worked hard to get to that position we have had a lot more females come on board and to be able to crew today is really rewarding and exciting.

"It doesn't matter male or female...but we are highlighting females can do this job too.

"This isn't my day job, I'm a primary school teacher, but I love being out on the water, giving back to the community, and passing on some of my knowledge to others. It's a great experience."

A FCPR spokesperson added: "These women are out on patrol ready to keep you safe.

"With temperatures rising, we expect a higher number of incidents. Please stay vigilant and take care of yourselves and those around you."
