A man is in critical condition in hospital after he was found unconscious in Belfast city centre.

Police were called after paramedics went to the assistance of the man in Royal Avenue around 16:40 GMT on Saturday.

The man was provided with medical assistance before being taken to hospital.

In a statement, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said officers are investigating a possible link to an earlier assault at 16:30 GMT in nearby Castle Place.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
