Lidl blue plaque homage to ex-Oasis star's gig vow

A supermarket has put a spoof plaque on its wall after rock star Liam Gallagher told fans he would "Gig at Lidl" if his Co-op Live arena shows fell through.

The ex-Oasis singer made the suggestion as an alternative to playing at Manchester's Co-op Arena, which was beset with problems before it opened.

The Lidl in nearby Newton Heath said the blue plaque was on its "very own Wonderwall".

Co-op Live's early teething troubles have been resolved, and Gallagher is due to play there later this month.

The Lidl plaque - in the style of an English Heritage blue plaque -says: "Liam Gallagher, legend ‘Almost played here’ June 2024."

The firm added: "The memory will live forever at the Newton Heath store in Manchester - a stone’s throw from where the frontman has been confirmed to play."

Co-op Live finally held its first gig on 15 May after earlier performances had to be postponed over issues with the heating system and ceiling.

Elbow - whose gig should have been the 15th show at the new arena - was held on May 14.

Gallagher is currently on a UK tour marking 30 years in the business.
