Doughnut seller 'overwhelmed' by retirement wishes

A woman who has sold doughnuts and ice creams in a town centre for nearly 50 years said she was "overwhelmed" by the kind messages she had received since her retirement.

Lina Ognissanti, 83, was stationed on Midland Road in Bedford since 1975 until her last shift on 30 September.

She said she missed "being in the heart of town", but was enjoying spending time with her grandchildren and walking her dog.

In 2018, she was given a private mayoral reception by the then-mayor Dave Hodgson to show his appreciation, after 3,000 people signed a petition for her to be recognised.

"I miss being in the heart of town working, seeing everyone and chatting with them," she said.

"I have been spotted when I am out. People come over to speak to me and wish me well, which is lovely.

"Retirement has been difficult, but I am slowly getting used to having more free time.

"I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren, walking my dog and gardening.

"I would like to thank everyone who visited me, for all their kind words, cards and gifts.

"Thank you for all the memories over the years."

Her family said: "Mum is the most kind-hearted, hard-working person I know.

"All of her family are very proud of her and truly amazed by the impact she has had on the community."

They said she may return for the occasional Saturday in a different location, but nothing was confirmed.

Bedford resident Vicky Eldin said: "I'm sad to see Lina leave, she's one of Bedford's favourite icons and is loved by everybody.

"I've known this amazing lady since l was little and she's always made time to chat and has seen generations of my family grow.

"Happy retirement Lina, you will be missed."
