Holi sees people celebrate the Hindu festival by covering friends and family members with bright colours

Marking the end of winter, Holi is known as the festival of colours.

For Hindus, it also celebrates the triumph of good over evil.

People offer prayers and eat traditional food and sweets to celebrate. They also gather on the streets and throw brightly coloured powders and coloured water over family members and friends.

This year, Holi was on Wednesday, but celebrations - which also feature dancing, music and singing - are due to take place across the north-west of England over the next 10 days.
