Police are searching for a man suspected of stabbing two people in Bangor, County Down, on Christmas Eve.

A man in his 20s and a woman in her 50s were injured in the attack and taken to hospital for treatment. One person is in a critical condition, police said.

It happened at about 15:30 GMT on Wednesday at a house in Chippendale Avenue.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Ch Insp Rocks said an investigation is under way and "efforts are being made to locate the suspect".

People are warned not to approach the suspect, who police say is 5ft 10in and armed with a hammer and a knife.

Police described the man as having short, dark hair and wearing "a blue hoodie, a grey coat, a dark coloured t-shirt, blue jeans, and dark trainers with white soles".

Ch Insp Rocks urged the public to "create a safe distance and contact police immediately" if they see the man.

In a separate incident, a man was stabbed outside a hotel on the Lurgan Road in Banbridge at about 20:30 GMT on Tuesday.

One of the attackers threw a liquid in the victim's face, police said.

The injured man attempted to run away, but fell and was then slashed multiple times across his back, before the attackers got into a vehicle and drove off.

Police said the attackers were male and had their faces covered and it is believed they were driving a black Toyota Avensis.
