Major refurbishment work is under way at Inverness Crematorium aimed at meeting UK government emissions targets.

Modern cremators will be installed, the small chapel refurbished and an extension will be built to house new furnaces and a filtration system known as an abatement plant. Improvements will also be carried out on the main chapel.

Highland Council said the upgrades will deliver more efficient cremators, and improve the overall quality of facilities.

The project is due to be completed by late 2026.

During the refurbishment, chapel service times will be reduced to three per day.

The number of direct cremation slots available will be increased, however, Highland Council has said at certain stages of the project, overall capacity may be limited to five cremations per day.

Councillor Graham MacKenzie, chair of Highland Council's communities and place committee, said: "We appreciate the public's understanding and cooperation during this essential project."
