Chief constable stops speeding car on way to work

The Chief Constable of Merseyside Police has described the moment he pulled over a speeding driver on his way to work.

Rob Carden had been discussing whether there had been an increase in drivers running red lights in Liverpool on BBC Radio Merseyside.

He agreed that standards on the roads "were not good" and said that the force was proactively seeking to improve road safety.

Asked what his own experiences were on the roads in the city, he said: "I put my blue lights on this morning about half five coming to work."

Carden said he noticed the driver speeding on Islington in Liverpool City Centre clocking about 50mph in a 30mph zone.

"I probably do it too much, pull people over, but there's definitely something we need to look at in terms of standards on the road and of course it's about public safety," he said.

Carden, who was chief constable of Cumbria Police for two years, returned to his native Merseyside in August 2025.

He started his policing career in Merseyside Police in 1992, following in his father's footsteps.
