Police want to trace an e-bike rider who officers believe was shot at by a group of four men who opened fire from a passing car.

The man riding a Sur-ron bike was targeted on Fulwood Way in Litherland, Sefton, at about 16:00 GMT on Monday, said Merseyside Police.

Four men from Liverpool - aged 21, 23, 33, and 42 - were chased down by armed police and arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, failing to stop a vehicle, and dangerous driving.

Det Sgt Leighanne Davies said efforts were now under way to find the e-bike rider, who the force think was the "intended target".

'Loaded weapons'

No injuries have been reported after the incident.

The four suspects were pursued along Melling Road in Aintree, where their car was in collision with a police vehicle before being abandoned on Epsom Close.

A police dog was used to search the area and two "viable" loaded weapons were found abandoned in bushes, the force said.

"To fire a weapon in the street, particularly at this time of day, is beyond comprehension," Det Sgt Davies said.

"It shows that people involved in serious organised crime simply don't care about anyone but themselves.

"I'm sure the community will be concerned by what happened yesterday, but I hope our response to this incident shows how determined we are to rid our streets of firearms and those prepared to use them."

The force has urged anyone with any information about the incident to get in touch "as a matter of urgency".
