Work on Station Quarter project to begin in March
Peterborough City CouncilWork to regenerate an area around a city station will begin by the end of March following a recent consultation, a council said.
Plans for the Peterborough Station Quarter project included improvements being made to the pedestrian access between the railway station and Cowgate.
Peterborough City Council has asked residents for their views on plans to cut down 35 trees on the Queensgate roundabout before work on the first phase of the scheme, the City Link, started in March.
The authority said it would be unable to retain the trees due to engineering requirements, but said landscaping proposals would see 49 new trees planted elsewhere.
It added that there were plans to plant seven additional small trees and shrubs on the site, as well as a rain garden and gabion walls.
The Station Quarter project is being delivered by the city council in partnership with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, Network Rail, the government-owned company Platform 4 and LNER.
Mohammed Farooq, a Peterborough First councillor and cabinet member for growth and regeneration at the authority, said: "I can also assure residents that we will continue to increase the tree canopy in the city as we move forwards.
"The Station Quarter project is going to be a real game-changer for our city and this first phase of work will be highly beneficial," said Farooq.
"City Link will transform this area into a much brighter, safer and accessible route," he added.
