A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a female student at the University of Lancashire.

The body of 19-year-old Carla Georgescu was found in student accommodation in Victoria Street, Preston, on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Officers said they had been called at 13:15 GMT to the report of a sudden death.

A 34-year-old man from Hartlepool has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody. The university said he was "unconnected" to the establishment.

The university said it was working with police and "the wellbeing and safety of our students and staff" was its priority.

"Support is being offered to anyone within our university community who is affected by this devastating incident," a spokesperson said.

"Our thoughts are very much with loved ones, friends, and all those who knew our student at this incredibly distressing time."

Lancashire Police said the man knew Ms Georgescu and the force was not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation.

"We know that news of this young woman's death and the police activity will be concerning to many, but we want to tell you that we have a team of detectives and uniformed officers working hard to try and establish the circumstances," a spokesman said.
