Coventry is to get six new artificial sports pitches, with funding from the Football Foundation.

The PlayZones are designed to be usable for a number of sports and were due to open later in the year.

Work on the first two is due to start later this month, with work getting under way on another two later in the spring.

The Football Foundation said the work would "revitalise" five existing multi-use games areas and that they had been designed with input from people living in the areas.

The pitches are earmarked for Edgwick Park, Jardine Crescent, Longford Park, Moat House, Virginia Road and Willenhall Brookstray.

As well as football, sports supported by the provision include cricket, netball and basketball.

Work on Edgwick Park and Longford Park is due to start first.

Work on the pitch at Willenhall Brookstray is set to start in the summer, subject to planning approval.
