Pupils sent home after fire in school kitchen

The Minster School in Southwell has closed after a fire in its kitchen.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the school, in Nottingham Road, at 09:51 BST on Wednesday after the fire started in an industrial freezer.

The fire was put out and crews left the scene by 11:30, a spokesperson for the fire service said.

Matthew Parris, chief executive officer of the Minster Trust for Education, which runs the school, said nobody was injured and the school had been closed for remedial works.

Mr Parris said the fire was contained and the damage was localised to the kitchen.

"The school went through its evacuation processes to make sure everyone was safe. It was quickly contained in that [kitchen] area.

"The kitchen has very much been damaged and all the food supplies have been declared unsafe," he said.

Students were sent home so remedial works could take place, and the trust said the school would reopen on Friday.
