Footage filmed by a bystander captured a "modified" car on fire in a supermarket car park in Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service attended Lidl in Wollaton Road, Beeston, on Monday at 17:06 GMT.

The service said the car - which seemed to have been modified by the owner - was well alight on arrival. Crews wore breathing gear and used two hose reel jets to extinguish the flames by 17:30.

On Tuesday, the remains of the damaged vehicle remained under a cordon in the car park, the service said.

Junaid Javed, 30, said he was shopping when the fire began and "within one to two minutes it engulfed the whole car".

"The owner of the car tried to take out as much of his stuff as possible even from the trunk," he added.

"Parking was closed completely, even those inside [Lidl] were not allowed to leave, it took an hour to let us go."

He said shoppers feared the fire could have reached the fuel tank or nearby cars.
