Jersey's new attorney general has been named as Matthew Jowitt.

King Charles III approved the appointment, which was announced in the States Assembly on Tuesday morning. Jowitt succeeds Mark Temple, who was appointed as Deputy Bailiff of Jersey in October and sworn in on Monday.

Robert MacRae, Bailiff of Jersey, said he was delighted to announce the appointment and was "confident that Mr Jowitt will serve the island with distinction and integrity".

The Attorney General is the principal legal adviser to the States of Jersey who may be called on to provide legal advice during sittings. Jowitt is due to take up the post of Attorney General on 2 March.

Following the announcement, Jowitt told the States: "I look forward to continuing the good work of, and maintaining the very high standards set by, my predecessor Mark Temple KC and to working with my talented and supportive colleagues in the Law Officers' Department."

Jowitt attended the University of Oxford and practised as a barrister in London from 1994 before he moved to Jersey in 2004.

He qualified as an Advocate in 2006, was appointed a Crown Advocate later that year and in 2020 Jowitt was sworn in as Her Majesty's Solicitor General for Jersey.
