Switch from seagull-proof sacks to wheelie bins
BBCThousands of town households will transition from seagull-proof sacks to wheeled bins for waste collections.
Cumberland Council said the majority of households in Carlisle already had wheelie bin collections but a small percentage still used sacks, which were introduced in 2014 to stop littering caused by the birds.
From March 2026, households that can accommodate the bins will change to fortnightly collections - in line with other areas.
The local authority said the move would improve collections and letters have been sent to those affected, with support roadshows organised in January.
The advice roadshows will take place across Carlisle on:
- 5 January between 10:30 GMT and 19:30 at The Parlour, Wigton Road Methodist Church
- 7 January between 10:30 GMT and 17:00 at Brampton Community Centre, Union Lane, Brampton
- 8 January between 08:30 GMT and 13:30 at Greystone Community Centre, Close Street
- 12 January from 09:00 GMT to 15:30 at Denton Holme Community Centre, Morley Street
Residents are being advised to check their online waste and recycling calendars via the council website.
