Trains through Knaresborough have been cancelled after part of a pavement collapsed at the foot of the town's viaduct.

Rail operator Northern said disruption to services in the area was expected until "later tonight" on Sunday to allow for "urgent repairs" to be carried out.

The viaduct, which runs over the River Nidd in North Yorkshire, carries passenger trains along the York-Harrogate-Leeds railway line and is one of Knaresborough's most recognisable landmarks.

Writing on X, Northern's commercial and customer director Alex Hornby said: "Rail services are impacted due (to) a pavement collapse at the foot of the viaduct in Knaresborough."

He added: "Sorry for any disruption caused."

North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have been contacted for comment.

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon told the BBC he had first received reports of the incident at about 17:00 GMT, but that it was not yet clear how it had happened.

He said: "The emergency services have cordoned off that part of the pavement.

"Hopefully, we will find out very soon what's happened and what the knock-on impact is likely to be.

"I've had emails from constituents already understandably worried about getting to work and school on Monday morning because of the train disruption."
