An MP says "it was just horrific to hear about," a pregnant woman being hit by an e-bike rider.

Dorset Police said the pedestrian's baby has since been born and is in a serious condition in hospital after the crash on Herbert Avenue, Poole, at about 15:50 GMT on Monday.

Bournemouth West MP Jessica Toale said local constituents "feel genuine terror at the speed and silence with which some of these e-bikes bomb along our pavements and streets".

Officers said the rider and a pillion passenger left the scene, leaving the woman aged in her 30s with injuries that were not serious.

Toale said: "At the moment the police have not apprehended the people who are responsible for the harm caused to this mother and her baby."

She urged anyone with information to come forward and help the police with their investigations.

The force is hoping to hear from witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage.

Electric bikes are legal to ride on the road, as long as they have not been modified.

Labour MP, Toale, said the government is looking at improving the guidance around e-bikes "so that no more members of the public get harmed".

She added: "We want to be able to give police the enforcement powers they need to deal with this issue properly."
