Cricket coach walks length of country in wellies for charity

A former coach for Somerset's cricket team has raised more than £20,000 for charity after he walked from Land's End to John O'Groats wearing wellington boots.

Matt Maynard, who also holds test caps for England, completed the 1,189 mile walk on Saturday.

Maynard was raising money for Help For Heroes and the Professional Cricketers Trust.

He managed to complete the feat, despite being hospitalised with a severe chest infection along the route.

Speaking to BBC Radio Somerset, Maynard said he dubbed it "wellieman walking", admitting wearing the wet-weather footwear was suprisingly comfortable.

"On the last day I got a little split by the heel I think that's just a sign that that was it, no more walking now."

But it was four days into the walk when he ended up being taken to hospital in Inverness, after only managing 150 miles.

"My body just couldn't take it," he said.

Mr Maynard said with work committments, he had to complete the rest of the walk in stages, with his final walk starting in Bridgwater and lasting 10 days heading through Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

He said his fundraising days are now behind him, telling the BBC anything he does now will be "just for the fun of it".
