Snowy conditions have shut roads as Storm Chandra grips the country.

Heavy snowfall blocked the B6276 from Brough, Cumbria, to Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, and it has become "only passable with extreme care", Westmorland and Furness Council says.

National Highways said the A66 has reopened after it was closed in both directions between the A67, near Bowes in County Durham, and the A685, near Brough, due to the snow.

A yellow warning for ice affecting Cumbria and the north-east of England is in place from midnight to until 10:00 GMT on Wednesday.

At Wrynose Pass in the Lake District, "treacherous icy conditions" have caused vehicles to become stuck, with some needing rescuing by police and mountain rescue teams.

The Wrynose Pass road from Little Langdale to Duddon Valley has been closed, with temperatures due to fall again tonight.

Drivers travelling across the Pennines have been advised to "plan ahead and consider alternate routes", with council crews working to clear snow on roads around Alston.

Westmorland and Furness Council added it had received reports of fallen trees as strong winds hit Cumbria.
