A woman has described the experience of damaging her car on a potholed major A-road as "terrifying".

Faith Best was travelling to work on the A14 near Brampton in Cambridgeshire on the morning of 9 December when she heard "a loud bang" which she feared was her tyre blowing.

She said it caused about £500 worth of damage and claimed there were seven other vehicles pulled over in the nearby lay-by.

National Highways said it was aware of "recent issues" on the road and had "completed a permanent repair" on Thursday.

Ms Best, 21, said the pothole she hit was in the middle lane approaching the exit to the A1 but did not see it as it was "too dark".

She said the alloy on the damaged wheel was "ruined".

"I'm completely freaking out at this point to be honest.

"I did have a panic attack and was crying on the phone to my colleagues asking for help," she said.

"I've never experienced something like that, especially in the dark and wet and having the fast 70mph lorries right next to me. It was terrifying."

She called highways officials through a road-side emergency phone.

"They said they were aware that the pothole was there and they'd been trying to deal with it but obviously they'd been doing these short-term emergency repairs that clearly are not working and it's becoming more and more dangerous."

A National Highways spokesperson said: "We are aware of recent issues on this stretch of the A14 and completed a permanent repair to the road surface on Thursday night.

"This work, overseen by a structural engineer, involved patching a significant area of the carriageway to provide more resilience on the approach to the bridge.

"We thank drivers for their patience and understanding."
